Birthstone & Birth Flower for January

Birth Flower for January

According to the language of flowers, or floriography, each month of the year has its own symbolic flower.

Like birthstones, birth flowers are particular blooms that represent birth months.

The month of January has two birth flowers - snowdrop and carnation.

January Birthflower

January Birthflower - Snowdrop

One of the birth flowers of January is the snowdrop. While snowdrops may be the less recognizable of the month’s two birth flowers, that doesn’t take away from how gorgeous they are!

Snowdrops are elegant white flowers that typically bloom during winter and early spring. They symbolise hope and rebirth. This meaning comes from the biblical story of the Garden of Eden, where God sends down snow after casting Eve away from the garden.

Since the earth was cold and bare, an angel breathed on a snowflake and created a beautiful; snowdrop flower. As these snowdrops bloom in pure white, they also represent purity. Their delicate petals are long, thin, and bent slightly like a droplet.

Carnation - Birth Flower January

The other birth flower of January is the carnation. Carnations are typically found in the Mediterranean and are known to have a “spicy” fragrance.

Carnations are often used as part of bouquets because they provide a pop of colour. These blooms appear in many hues, including red, purple, and white. No matter the colour, carnations symbolise admiration and distinction. A good option for a Mother’s Day bouquet!
