Birth Stone for August
Birthstones are gems that have been assigned to each month of the year. Each birthstone has unique symbolism. The birthstone tradition dates back to ancient times when people believed that gemstones had magical powers.
There are two different birthstone charts: traditional and modern. The birthstone chart was said to be inspired by the 12 gemstones on the breastplate of the High Priest of the Israelites in the Bible. The modern birthstone chart was created in 1912 by the National Association of Jewellers.
This new birthstone listing features more gem options than the traditional one. August is one of the few birth months that is represented by three separate birthstones.
Traditionally, August’s birthstone is the sardonyx. Peridot and spinel were then added to the modern chart.
August Birth Stone - Sardonyx
As mentioned, sardonyx is the traditional birthstone of August, dating back over 4,000 years.
This stone was popular in ancient times and was set into Roman seals and rings. During this time, sardonyx was associated with eloquence and clarity.
In modern times, sardonyx represents courage, stability, and happiness.
August Birth Stone - Spinel
Spinel was officially added to the birthstone chart in 2016 and is known for its bright red colour. This gem is also found in orange, pink and purple.
It is said that spinel can help release stress from those who wear it. Spinel as an August birthstone is a sign of passion and devotion.
Peridot - Birthstone for August
Peridot is the final August birthstone. This gem is recognised for its lime green glow and is sometimes known as the “evening emerald”.
It was also once believed that these peridot crystals were the tears of the volcanic goddess. In ancient times, people would drink medicine from goblets made out of peridot because they believed that it helped make the medicine stronger.
Now, peridot is said to bring health to those who wear it. Its green share is also believed to inspire creativity and eloquence.
